Zusammenfassung: The quality of in place shotcrete is very largely dependent on the skill of the shotcrete nozzleman. With growing use being made of shotcrete both for surface structures as well as underground works a number of overseas countries have established shotcrete nozzleman certification and qualification schemes.

SANCOT feels the time has come to institute such a programme in Southern Africa. One of the themes of the symposium is to explore the merits and implications of this proposal.

Zusammenfassung: Toxic metals can affect human health. Some toxic metal anions, including arsenic, antimony, selenium and tellurium are by-products of the mining and processing of major metal ores, such as those of copper, lead and zinc.

These by-product metals can find their way into soils and ground water. Arsenic, for instance, occurs naturally in many complex mineral rocks, and in this form is relatively harmless, but when exposed to air and water, it becomes soluble and toxic to plants, animals and humans. Both mining and drilling wells for drinking water can expose the arsenic and turn it into two soluble forms, arsenate and arsenite.

Zusammenfassung: The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) will jointly convene a World Gold Conference every two years. In 2009 it will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa and hosted under the auspices of the SAIMM. Some important aspects of the current mining environment will provide opportunities and threats for the industry in the foreseeable future.
