This WE-Heraeus-Seminar focuses on the technique of magnetic small angle neutron scattering, which is one of the most important methods for magnetic microstructure determination in condensed-matter physics and materials science. Magnetic SANS provides access to bulk properties and yields, quite uniquely, information on the mesoscopic length scale (roughly 1-1000 nm). This is an important size regime where many macroscopic materials properties are realized. Currently, the magnetic SANS community can be roughly subdivided into two larger groups: the research of one group is anchored in the domain of condensed-matter physics with a focus on fundamental questions such as skyrmion crystals and topological spin structures, complex long-range-ordered spin structures, and vortex lattices in superconductors, while the second group of scientists employs the magnetic SANS method for scrutinizing nanoscale magnetism in terms of a micromagnetic continuum description; materials classes which are studied are e.g. permanent magnets, magnetic steels, nanoparticles and ferrofluids, or complex alloys.

Life Sciences is a rapidly expanding field in the use of neutrons. The number of users at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz-Zentrum (MLZ) performing experiments related to life sciences is constantly growing. Be it contrast variation for matching out protein, DNA or lipids or the hunt for catalytical important hydrogen atoms, neutrons play an important role in determining structures of biologically relevant molecules or membranes. Neutron tomography on living plants or tissue uses the huge difference in incoherent scattering of hydrogen as compared to deuterium. Using incoherent and coherent inelastic neutron scattering, investigation of equilibrium dynamics of biological systems is possible on the picosecond and nanosecond time scale. With future neutron sources, time resolved investigations will become more and more important. Dedicated sample environment and additional in situ measurement techniques all optimized for small sample volumes will be needed in the future.
This is why the MLZ Conference 2021, initially planned for 2020, intends to bring together experts in the field of life sciences regardless whether they have used neutron scattering techniques or not. The conference will try to cover all relevant fields of life sciences and will discuss on how to improve neutron instrumentation, access to neutron beam time, sample environments and support labs for future life sciences users.

The conference is co-organized by the European Spallation Source and MAX IV Laboratory and supported by the Lund Institute of Advanced Neutron and X-ray Science (LINXS).
The conference will emphasize novel techniques for surface x-ray and neutron scattering including instrumentation and source development. Topics will include in-situ and in-operando surface studies, nanostructured surfaces and interfaces, surface and interfaces in soft matter, biological interfaces, emergent interfacial materials, and dynamics of surfaces, interfaces and nanostructures.

The Mainz Institute for Theoretical Physics will host a 2020 summer school for Ph.D. students in theoretical physics, the fifth of an annual series. The main theme of the school is "Scattering Amplitudes", ranging from recent new formal developments to precision calculations. Topics include lectures on the geometry of scattering amplitudes, on mathematical functions associated to loop amplitudes, on phenomenological applications in jet physics and on applications in perturbative gravity. The aim of the school is thus to provide a concise overview of the most important theory tools to carry out innovative research in the field of scattering amplitudes.
