MIC24-01 — EMBL Course Fundamentals of widefield and confocal microscopy and imaging
22 Apr 2024 - 26 Apr 2024 • Heidelberg, Germany
Organizer:
EMBL Heidelberg
Abstract:
Light microscopy is the most widely used form of microscopy for life science research. The correct handling of the microscope and optimising image quality (e.g. contrast, resolution) as well as experimental design according to different applications are crucial to obtain the best results. This course will provide the participants with an overview of the basics of microscopy (light and optics, contrast techniques and imaging). The confocal part will include multicolour, 3D, and time-lapse imaging as well as spectral imaging, introduction to photobleaching and photoactivation techniques. Basic image analysis tools including measurement functions, colocalisation, and spectral unmixing as well as 3D/4D image processing will be covered, both in theory and practice. The course will combine lectures with intense daily hands-on practices followed by discussions.

809. WE-Heraeus-Seminar — Functional Materials at Surfaces - Fabrication, Atomic-scale Characterization, and Advances Towards Application
05 May 2024 - 10 May 2024 • Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Germany
Organizer:
Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation
Abstract:
The topic of functional materials at surfaces covers a wide range of material classes and length scales, from single surface-adsorbed organic molecules to extended 2D structures, and thus research areas. What these areas all have in common is the goal to understand the physics that ultimately defines the properties of these materials, and eventually to learn how to modify these properties in a controlled and reproducible manner to devise materials optimized for applications. One enormously powerful toolbox to achieve this is scanning probe microscopy (SPM). Over the past 40 years since its invention, SPM has evolved from a mere imaging technique to a tool that can provide information on structural, electronic, optical, and magnetic properties, and even facilitate the manipulation of individual adsorbates, all at the atomic level. These advances over the past decades have sparked tremendous progress not only in our understanding of the physics of such low-dimensional systems, but also in our ability to build structures with specifically tailored functionality. While the main focus of this seminar will be scanning probe based approaches, we want to also bridge the gap to alternative and complementary high-resolution characterization techniques.

EIC24-01 — Imaging down to single-molecule resolution: STED & MINFLUX nanoscopy
21 Oct 2024 - 26 Oct 2024 • Heidelberg, Germany
Organizer:
EMBL Heidelberg
Abstract:
The course aims to train biological microscopy users in two forms of super-resolution light microscopy, Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED) Microscopy and Minimal photon fluxes (MINFLUX). Both techniques require technical understanding of the process and instrumentation, training in the method specific requirements of sample preparation and in the acquisition procedures and an understanding of how to further analyze the acquired image data. It is the aim of the course to provide the tools for the successful execution of nanoscopy experiments with these two distinct methods. The course should also allow the participants to understand the specific benefits of the different techniques and thus help them in choosing the right approach for their experimental needs.
