Welchen Trends sollte man folgen? Welche Erfahrungen machen wir in der Praxis? Womit können wir rechnen? Welche Neuerungen sind vielleicht gar keine Trends und werden sich nicht durchsetzen?

HIV Glasgow 2018
28 oct 2018 - 31 oct 2018 • Glasgow, Royaume-Uni
Résumé:
The programme is of interest to clinical investigators from across the globe to review current research and discuss its implications for HIV management strategies. Although there has been steady progress in HIV drug treatment, significant challenges still remain, including persistence of elevated risk of non-AIDS morbidity, with potential for HIV and/or antiretroviral therapy (ART) as causes, paediatric and adolescent care, models of care for the ageing population, and treatment issues throughout less well-resourced parts of Europe and the rest of the world. The Congress is also moving into areas beyond treatment, such as prevention, with time in the programme focussed on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and issues across Europe and beyond. The important role of people living with HIV in treatment decisions and self-management continues to feature, and we look forward to a number of perspectives in the programme from the community.

EMBL Science and Society Conference: Infectious Diseases: Past, Present, and Future
15 nov 2018 - 16 nov 2018 • Heidelberg, Allemagne
Résumé:
An astronomical number of microbes live in and on our bodies. They are normally harmless and help our body perform vital tasks, but some can cause disease, spread from person to person, and even result in full-blown epidemics. Infectious diseases are caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites that infiltrate the body’s natural barriers and multiply to produce illnesses, which can range from mild to deadly. Although progress has been made to treat many infectious diseases, humankind is constantly vulnerable to a wide array of both resurgent and new microorganisms.

Keystone Symposia: Role of the Genital Tract Microbiome in Sexual and Reproductive Health
11 dec 2018 - 15 dec 2018 • Le Cap, Afrique du Sud
Résumé:
Bacteria and fungi residing in the female genital tract have been associated with elevated risks of HIV acquisition and transmission, pelvic inflammatory disease, miscarriage, preterm birth, and invasive maternal and neonatal infections. The increased availability of high throughput genomic testing since the turn of the century has revealed a more detailed picture of these organisms than was possible when evaluation depended on microscopy and culture. The interrelationships between sexually transmitted infections, vaginal dysbiosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and vaginal pathobiont carriage are being elucidated, and their effects on the cervicovaginal mucosal barrier and immune system are being characterized. The mechanisms that may lead to adverse outcomes are being unraveled, and an increasing number of interventions are in clinical trials. In this meeting, the current understanding of female and male genital tract microbiology and immunology, including functional microbiology and biofilms, will be presented and knowledge gaps identified. Potential mechanisms leading to adverse outcomes, and a variety of potential prevention and/or treatment interventions, will be presented and discussed. The exponential progress made in recent years will hopefully lead to efficacious public health interventions to reduce the high prevalence of adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes in women, especially in resource-poor settings.

Keystone Symposia: Tuberculosis - Mechanisms, Pathogenesis and Treatment
17 jan 2019 - 21 jan 2019 • Banff, Alberta, États-Unis
Résumé:
The tuberculosis (TB) research and development landscape has seen many exciting breakthroughs over the past two decades. New diagnostics have emerged; innovative research has significantly reduced biological uncertainties; two novel drugs were launched; and public-private partnerships are dedicating massive efforts to dramatically shorten TB therapy, tackle resistant disease and discover new vaccines. Despite these achievements, TB remains the leading infectious disease cause of death globally. Meanwhile, shifts in funding priorities and a false sense of success could threaten the current focus and momentum, which would have catastrophic consequences. The broad themes covered in the main conference program and the three workshops will achieve the following aims: 1) To re-ignite collaborative and multidisciplinary research by bringing together experts in basic science, translational research, and drug discovery and development; 2) To bring together young brilliant minds and established investigators to encourage new discussions and the exchange of innovative ideas for strategies moving forward; and 3) To foster cross-fertilization at the interface between research and development, all aspects of which are critical if we are to tackle the TB pandemic and achieve the next innovation leap.
