| abstract: In 2001, the then Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) launched The Sir Mark Oliphant Conferences - International Frontiers of Science and Technology on the centenary of the birth of Sir Mark Oliphant, a Foundation Fellow of both Australian Academies and the first President of the Academy of Science. The objective of the scheme is to support the goal of the Government's International Science Linkages Program by providing financial support to stage strategically significant international conferences in Australia on high priority, cutting edge, multi-disciplinary themes. The Nanophotonics Down Under 2009 - Device and Applications will be an interdisciplinary meeting devoted to lasers and lights interacting with nano-dimensional objects for photonics applications such as photovoltaics, plasmonics, photonic crystals, biomedicine and data storage.
