Battery Safety Summit
22 Oct 2019 - 25 Oct 2019 • Alexandria, VA, United States
Abstract:
Research continues to boost the energy storage capability of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) leading to expanding applications and consumer use. Higher energy plus increased use leads to higher risk. Therefore, accurate tests and models are critical for predicting and controlling the complex electrochemical, thermal, and mechanical behavior of LIBs. Additionally, regulations to promote protection and information derived from forensic investigations to enhance prevention are required. The task of implementing effective safety strategies falls on R&D scientists (chemical, electrical, material, and software engineers), battery manufacturers, regulatory authorities, forensic scientists, and the public. The 10th Annual Battery Safety Summit convenes these stakeholders to continue the vital dialogue of integrating and implementing LIB safety to meet ever-increasing energy demands.

IPMS2019 — International Process Metallurgy Symposium
05 Nov 2019 - 06 Nov 2019 • Espoo, Finland
Abstract:
The purpose of this International Process Metallurgy Symposium is to bring together researchers and industry experts to share latest results and developments in the area of Process Metallurgy, or extracting metals from their primary and secondary raw materials in a sustainable manner. This Symposium has the sub-title of “Metallurgy as a tool for challenges in circular economy”, which emphasizes the important role metallurgy and metallurgists have in solving the resource deficit in metals and minerals. We have already seen the shift from “traditional” raw material research towards recycled materials and their impact on metallurgical processes. Another emerging or growing trend is the need and request for minimizing and utilizing waste in processes. All this underlines the importance of fundamental metallurgical research, knowledge and education, when we are changing from linear economy towards Circular Economy of Metals. The presentations of the Symposium focus on secondary raw materials or their elements’ behavior in metallurgical processes, or industrial integration. The topics have theoretical, experimental, simulation or modeling, as well as industrial approach. Further on, environmental and advanced materials preparation issues in the secondary material processing are also covered in the Symposium.

Infoday "Mechanical recycling of batteries"
22 Jan 2020 • DECHEMA-Haus, Frakfurt/Main, Germany
Organizer:
DECHEMA, Gesellschaft für Chemische Technik und Biotechnologie e.V.
Abstract:
Li-Ion batteries are one emerging technology, which is incorporated into more and more technical structures of our everyday life. Especially the expected growth rates in the field of electro mobility will provide large mass streams of spent batteries in the upcoming years. One battery unit of a full electric vehicle (PEV) weights typically more than 200 kg, some of the upcoming generations up to 700 kg. The state of the art battery technology bases on Li-ion technology, using different cathode active materials like iron-phosphate and nickel-, manganese-, and / or cobalt-oxides. Further components are metallic foils, organic electrolytes, special lithium-salts and electronic and structural components. Thus, spent batteries are an interesting subject to establish concepts of circular economy. Due to the complexity of the battery structure and the size of a typical battery cell, as well as its chemical and potential energy content, several challenges arise during the handling and the processing of the batteries.

The “DECHEMA Infoday” will address these challenges and give an insight into several new developments and technological concepts in fields of battery logistics, mechanical and metallurgical processing. The “DECHEMA Infoday” will be held in conjunction with the project AutoBattRec of EIT RawMaterials.
