Résumé: Surface and colloid science is essential to the art and science of making advanced modern and future materials. Accordingly, the aim of this Symposium is to highlight the role of surface and colloid science for the synthesis and processing of advanced polymeric and inorganic materials. Four main topics will be covered, namely, polymers and organic coatings, materials from renewable resources, porous materials and nanoparticles. The Symposium is an international meeting, aiming for ca 100-150 participants, with invited oral and contributed poster presentations.

Résumé: Die Seminarteilnehmer sollen mit den modernen Grundlagen der Stabilität kolloidaler Systeme, vor allem Dispersionen und Suspensionen, vertraut werden. Sie sollen die wichtigsten Voraussetzungen zur Herstellung von Stabilisierung von Dispersionen und Emulsionen kennen lernen. Die Theorien der Kolloidstabilität, DLVO-Theorie und sterische Stabilisierung, werden auf einfacher Grundlage behandelt. Der Einfluss der Art der Sedimentation und Aggregation wird im Zusammenhang mit praktischen Anwendungen vermittelt.

Dabei werden thermodynamische und kinetische Aspekte der Stabilisierung behandelt. Die Teilnehmer sollen die generellen Voraussetzungen und Möglichkeiten zur Präparation und Berechnung von Emulsionen sowie den Zusammenhang zwischen der Natur der Emulgatoren mit der Struktur der Emulsion kennen lernen. Weiterhin wird ein Einblick in moderne physikalisch-chemische Charakterisierungsmethoden gegeben.

Résumé: The Second International Conference on Frontiers in Nanoscience and Technology (Cochin Nano - 2009) being organized by the Department of Physics, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin, India, is aimed at bringing eminent researchers from both academia and industry under one roof to discuss and to deliberate on the latest developments in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Résumé: Colloidal suspensions undergo Brownian diffusion that arrests at high density, remobilizing under flow. Slowly sheared non-Brownian particles (dry or in suspension) likewise show chaotic trajectories, but of quite different origin. Both systems can jam spontaneously when too large a stress is applied.

This meeting will compare and contrast the flow, jamming and arrest of Brownian and non-Brownian materials.

Résumé: Smart materials can be defined as materials that sense and react to environmental conditions or stimuli (e.g. mechanical, chemical, electrical, or magnetic signals). In the last decade, a wide range of novel smart materials have been produced for aerospace, transportation, telecommunications, and domestic applications. Furthermore there is increased activity in integrating smart materials with nanotechnology to develop novel materials for the applications in biomaterials, sensors, actuators, and textiles. Nanotechnology would permit control of matter at the level of atoms and molecules which would form the building blocks of smart materials.Smart materials are thus evolving from traditional fiber reinforced composite through functionally graded materials to the current nanotechnologically grown materials.
