2nd Frankfurt Conference on Quality Control in Life Sciences
02. Sep 2018 - 06. Sep 2018 • Frankfurt am Main, Deutschland
Zusammenfassung:
The international Frankfurt Conference on Quality Control brings scientists on all career stages together to discuss mechanisms of cellular homeostasis and their impact on pathogenesis of diseases. Cellular quality control mechanisms are essential to maintain cell survival and homeostasis, and their malfunction leads to severe damage, ultimately contributing to and/or causing a variety of malignant and fatal diseases. Whilst many molecular mechanisms driving pathogenesis have been uncovered already, we are only beginning to understand the interconnectivity and concerted regulation of these pathways and the influence of contextual factors. A deeper knowledge of the role of cellular quality control pathways, e.g. in cancer, neurodegeneration or development, holds enormous potential to better understand disease onset and/or progression and potentially develop novel treatments.

EMBO | EMBL Symposium: Principles of Chromosome Structure and Function
05. Sep 2018 - 08. Sep 2018 • Heidelberg, Deutschland
Zusammenfassung:
Chromosomes are arguabely one of the most important structures inside cells. Several meters of DNA are compacted into micrometer-sized assemblies in every human cell. Recent advances in our understanding of how this is achieved, and of its implications on nuclear functions, have been breathtaking. Instead of black boxes, or imaginary text-book style folding models, advanced imaging and genomics techniques have layed the foundation for the first well-informed molecular models of chromsomes. These portray chromosomes as largley self-organising entities of nucleosome-melts, organised by the universal SMC complexes and additional chromosomal proteins. Recent work culminated in the biochemical reconstitution of chromosome formation from defined components (Hirano).

4th Plant Protease and Programmed Cell Death Symposium
11. Sep 2018 - 13. Sep 2018 • Gent, Belgien
Zusammenfassung:
After three successful conferences on Plant Proteases and Programmed Cell Death organized in Hemavan, Sweden (2011); Barcelona, Spain (2013); and Oxford, UK (2016), it is our pleasure to host the fourth meeting in the beautiful medieval town of Ghent, Belgium. The roles of proteases in cell death, immunity, and developmental processes in plants have received increasing attention over the past years. On the one hand, proteases exert a key regulatory level of posttranslational modification on their substrates. On the other hand, proteolytic cascades are involved in household functions, as well as responsible for point-of-no-return decisions during developmentally or environmentally controlled programmed cell death. Despite their importance, however, we still know little about the functions and mode-of-actions of individual plant proteases. Over the past years, several research groups have tackled the functional characterization of plant proteases from different angles. Some laboratories are advancing technology development, others focus on biological processes that depend on protease activities, while again others elucidate the biochemistry of specific protease families.

The number of non-coding RNAs within the human genome is unknown; however, recent transcriptomic and bioinformatic studies suggest that there are thousands of them. Many of the newly identified ncRNAs have not been validated for their function. It is also likely that many ncRNAs are non functional (sometimes referred to as junk RNA), and are the product of spurious transcription.

FASEB SRC: Small GTPases in Membrane Processes: Trafficking, Autophagy and Disease
23. Sep 2018 - 28. Sep 2018 • Leesburg, VA, Vereinigte Staaten
Zusammenfassung:
The fields of membrane trafficking in general and autophagy in particular got the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2013 and 2016, respectively. This work laid the foundation for understanding these processes at a mechanistic detail and high precision. The question of how membrane structure and function is regulated is highly relevant to human health and disease. Regulation of membrane-associated processes is a very dynamic field relevant to various disciplines, from neuroscience to cell and developmental biology. Small GTPases have emerged as important regulators of all membrane trafficking processes. These GTPases together with their various interactors regulate intracellular trafficking, organelle dynamics, proteostasis, signaling and metabolism. Mutations in these molecules result in human diseases, from inherited to complex disorders. For example, dis-regulation of small GTPase networks has been implicated in multiple diseases, including cancer and neurological disorders.

03. Okt 2018 - 06. Okt 2018 • Heidelberg, Deutschland
Zusammenfassung:
Before the genetic information stored in DNA can be used to direct cell growth and metabolism, it has to be transferred into RNA. Messenger RNAs (mRNAs) are key components in the transmission of genetic information in all life forms - from viruses to complex mammalian organisms. Exciting recent findings have revealed a remarkable degree of complexity in the lives of mRNAs and the field is rapidly developing.

Keystone Symposia: Drivers of Type 2 Diabetes - From Genes to Environment
07. Okt 2018 - 11. Okt 2018 • Seoul, Republik Korea
Zusammenfassung:
The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing worldwide and is a major threat to global public health that requires urgent action. Over the last few decades, significant advances have been made in terms of identifying novel susceptibility genes and signaling pathways that play pivotal roles in the pathogenesis of diabetes and its related metabolic disorders. However, a major gap in understanding the current global epidemic of diabetes is the lack of knowledge regarding how molecular interactions between the environment and the susceptibility genes are regulated within an altered metabolic milieu. This meeting will address these unresolved gaps in the etiopathogenesis of diabetes and focus on the latest advances that are linked to the molecular drivers of diabetes mellitus. Topics include: systemic regulation of adipocytes in diabetes; microvesicles, noncoding RNA, and intercellular communications; physiological drivers in hunger and energy homeostasis; epigenetics and metabolic control in diabetes; novel signaling players related to insulin resistance; adaptation of beta cell to chronic metabolic stress; environmental triggers in diabetes and metabolic diseases; and molecular targets for nutrient sensing and signaling. The organizers anticipate that this meeting will bring about a major shift in addressing the causes of diabetes mellitus, as the topics emphasized in this meeting have not yet been explored widely. Through the novel discoveries of diabetes research presented at this meeting, we hope to provide evidence-based insight to favorably impact people with diabetes across the world.

2018 EMBO Workshop - RNA and genome maintenance: Cooperation and conflict management
10. Okt 2018 - 13. Okt 2018 • Mainz, Deutschland
Zusammenfassung:
Genomes of living organisms are exposed to damage arising from different sources. To maintain genome integrity, cells and organisms have evolved elaborate mechanisms and signaling pathways that regulate different processes including DNA repair and cell cycle. Recent findings highlighted the intricate interplay between genome stability maintenance and RNA metabolism: Transcription can interfere with DNA replication and thus pose a serious threat to genome stability. Conversely, DNA damage activates signaling pathways that globally affect transcription, splicing and RNA stability. Moreover, non-coding RNA and RNA-binding proteins play an integral part in DNA repair and DNA damage response. This EMBO Workshop will gather established scientists and junior researchers that study the mutual interactions between the DNA damage response and RNA metabolism.

EMBL Course: Software Carpentry
15. Okt 2018 - 18. Okt 2018 • Heidelberg, Deutschland
Zusammenfassung:
Computation is an integral part of today's research as data has grown too large or too complex to be analysed by hand. An ever growing fraction of science is performed computationally and many wet-lab biologists spend part of their time on the computer. Many scientists struggle with this aspect of research as they have not been properly trained in the necessary set of skills. The result is that too much time is spent using inefficient tools when progress could be faster. This is a course for researchers in the life sciences who are using computers for their analyses, even if not full time. The target student will know a little bit of command line/programmatic computer usage, but not consider themselves an expert. A target student will have written a for loop in some language before, but will not know what git is (or at least not be very comfortable with advanced git usage).

EMBO | EMBL Symposium: Systems Genetics: From Genotypes to Molecular Phenotypes to Complex Traits
24. Okt 2018 - 27. Okt 2018 • Heidelberg, Deutschland
Zusammenfassung:
Systems genetics is the extension of genetics to the system-level. It aims at understanding the relationship between genotypes and molecular phenotpes at the genome-scale, thus integrating genomics with large-scale molecular and phenotypic profiling. This opens the door to the investigating of the genetic basis of complex traits in a variety of model systems, from yeast growth phenotype to human disease. Taking advantage of natural genetic variation allows to investigate the effect of many mild genetic perturbations, an approach which contrasts with the all-or-none targeted genetic perturbations.

Keystone Symposia: From Rare to Care - Discovery, Modeling and Translation of Rare Diseases
11. Nov 2018 - 14. Nov 2018 • Wien, Österreich
Zusammenfassung:
Work over the past 30 years has resulted in the identification of genes for ~50% of the estimated 7,000 rare genetic diseases; it is predicted that most of the remaining disease genes will be identified in the next 10 years. Approximately 500 medicinal products are currently on the market for rare diseases. The accelerating pace of rare disease gene identification means, in effect, an almost commensurate increase in molecularly defined, readily diagnosable, but nonetheless poorly understood and untreatable, diseases. This meeting will examine the current and future bottlenecks to gene discovery, disease modeling, and therapeutic approaches and suggest strategies to enable progress in this regard. Ultimately, successful deployment of precision medicine for rare diseases will inform such approaches more broadly.

EMBL Science and Society Conference: Infectious Diseases: Past, Present, and Future
15. Nov 2018 - 16. Nov 2018 • Heidelberg, Deutschland
Zusammenfassung:
An astronomical number of microbes live in and on our bodies. They are normally harmless and help our body perform vital tasks, but some can cause disease, spread from person to person, and even result in full-blown epidemics. Infectious diseases are caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites that infiltrate the body’s natural barriers and multiply to produce illnesses, which can range from mild to deadly. Although progress has been made to treat many infectious diseases, humankind is constantly vulnerable to a wide array of both resurgent and new microorganisms.

2018 IMB Workshop: Molecular Mechanisms of Circadian Clocks
15. Nov 2018 - 16. Nov 2018 • Mainz, Deutschland
Zusammenfassung:
The circadian clock underlies the regulation of numerous physiological processes, such as sleep-wake cycles, body temperature, blood pressure, hormone production or the immune system. In fact, the importance of research on circadian clocks was acknowledged by the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, which was awarded for "discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm". Despite its broad impact across many systems, it is only recently that we are beginning to understand the molecular connections between this clock and the physiological processes that it affects.

Keystone Symposia: Leveraging Genomic Diversity to Promote Animal and Human Health
25. Nov 2018 - 29. Nov 2018 • Kampala, Uganda
Zusammenfassung:
Genomic variation is a driving force of animal and human health, and susceptibility to disease. Yet our knowledge rarely spans human ethnic genomic diversity and genomic variation between animal breeds, limiting their translational impact. This symposium aims to: 1. Highlight translational genomics in humans and animals (clinical medicine and animal breeding for health and productivity) 2. Explore synergies and cross-disciplinary learning 3. Explore opportunities to leverage genomic diversity to push the current boundaries to translation 4. Address translation and affordability in low- and middle-income settings. Large-scale genomics initiatives like Genome England, the US Precision Medicine initiative, and the Human Heredity and Health in African Consortium, are providing extraordinarily large data sets to explore useful genotype-phenotype connections. Equivalent initiatives for animal data are starting. This meeting will explore the translation of genomic research in animals and humans; high and low-resourced environments; ethnic diversity; and cultural context. Identifying common strands in animal and human health opens up opportunities for repurposing of ideas and applications, and for finding innovative solutions for translational genomics through cross-boundary communities of practice.

Integrin targeted therapeutics have been under investigation for some time, but few compounds have made it to/ remained on the market due to side effects or lack of efficacy. Given the more recent structural insights, better understanding of downstream pathways, and potential application to a range of therapeutic areas, there has been a resurgence of interest in integrin inhibitors. This symposium will bring together researchers in this area to provide both a historical overview of the area and recent progress in designing the next generation of integrin inhibitors.
