Abstract The GRC on Oscillations and Dynamic Instabilities in Chemical Systems will present cutting-edge research on nonlinear dynamics and pattern formation in chemical and biological systems under the conditions far from equilibrium. It includes the study of kinetic oscillations and traveling waves, localized patterns, dissipative interfaces, deterministic chaos and chemical computations. These emergent phenomena as well as other types of self-organization will be discussed in terms of theoretical and experimental approaches. This meeting will also provide opportunities for graduate students and young scientists to present their latest works at poster sessions, and some of them will be selected for short talks. The collegial atmosphere of this conference will offer ample opportunities for informal gatherings, provide avenues for scientists from different disciplines to brainstorm, and promote cross-disciplinary collaborations for exploring new fields of science.

 LocationMaastricht, Netherlands
 Organizer Technologisch Institute, Antwerp, Belgium
Abstract Sustainability, human health and quality of life have been selected by the ISCRE 22 Organizing Committee as key symposium themes because these topics will continue to determine the scientific, industrial and political agenda for many decades to come.

Energy, raw materials and feedstock resources will become increasingly scarce in the next decades while the demand is increasing tremendously in many world regions. Novel technologies and processes are needed for example for the efficient production of chemicals from biomass feedstocks and for the use of renewable and clean energy sources for electricity production and transportation. The growth and aging of the world population requires new and innovative health systems, such as in the field of controlled drug release, development of smart medical devices, and application of smart diagnostics and analytics. The quality of life is largely dependent on the air and water quality, the degree of emission reduction, development of new personal care and food products, and not to forget on improving process and product safety.

We hope that these three symposium sub-themes will motivate and inspire you to submit exciting and challenging abstracts that may cover many different aspects of these themes. For further guidance, we have collected a number of topics under four different levels, - ranging from fundamental principles to commercial applications -, that might serve as examples of possible contributions.

29.Ion Specific Hofmeister Effects
 Dates 03 Sep 2012 → 05 Sep 2012
[ID=424985] Go to top of page
 LocationOxford, United Kingdom
Abstract The hydration of ions and the interactions of ions with (bio)molecules play a key role in many natural and technological processes. These effects are usually framed in terms of the lyotropic or Hofmeister series which traditionally orders cations and anions according to their ability to salt-out proteins. Since its formulation more than one hundred years ago, the lyotropic series has been invoked in myriad effects including the crystallization of proteins, enzyme activities, the swelling of tissues, salt solubilities, ion exchange, surface tension of electrolytes, and bubble coalescence.

Although it is now clear that the Hofmeister series is intimately connected with ion hydration in homogeneous and heterogeneous environments and with ion pairing, the molecular origin of these effects has been poorly understood. Biochemists and physical chemists have been typically using the term Hofmeister series to put a label on ion specific behavior in various environments, rather than to reach a molecular level understanding and, consequently, an ability to predict a particular effect of a specific salt ion.
