 Dates 03 Jun 2012 → 08 Jun 2012
[ID=454795] Go to top of page
 LocationLucca (Barga), Italy
 Organizer Gordon Research Conferences
Abstract The field of organic electronics has enjoyed tremendous progress since the discoveries in the late seventies of conducting polymers and in the late eighties of efficient electroluminescent devices based on small organic molecules or polymers. Technological progress in this field takes place hand-in-hand with leaps in our understanding of underlying fundamental processes. A key challenge is to understand and, in turn, to control the basic current- and light-driven processes in organic materials.

This challenge is the central theme of this Gordon Research Conference. Questions to be addressed include: How do film structure and morphology affect the fundamental electronic processes in organic electronic materials? What is our current understanding of charge/exciton processes (injection/creation, transport, trapping/decay) in organic electronic materials? What are the optimal materials, morphologies, and device architectures for state-of-the-art organic solar cells, light emitting diodes, and transistors? What are the next opportunities for organic electronics?

The Gordon Research Conference on Electronic Processes in Organic Materials will provide an ideal setting to discuss in depth these and related topics with leading scientists from academia, government, and industry. Various sessions will be devoted to debating the questions outlined above, for a conference that will highlight the state-of-the-art in terms of our understanding of the fundamentals of organic electronics. For the first time in the conference's history, a Gordon Research Seminar (GRS), held immediately before the conference, will provide an excellent opportunity for young researchers to ease into the program.

 Organizer Gordon Research Conferences
Abstract The 2012 Biopolymers Gordon Research Conference will explore recent advances and future trends in understanding the relationship between structure and function of biological polymers (e.g. proteins, nucleic acids, macromolecular assemblies), with emphasis on physical and chemical principles underlying their behaviors in solution and in the cellular environment. Session topics will span multiple disciplines, including the consequences of macromolecular crowding, the mechanisms of macromolecular complex assembly and aggregation, structural dynamics and allostery, elasticity and mechanics, and protein folding and design. The sessions have been organized so that each topic is addressed using diverse approaches and techniques including simulation, spectroscopy, single molecule measurements, x-ray crystallography and a variety of biochemical and biophysical solution methods, with applications to basic and clinical science. The Biopolymers GRC is uniquely poised to foster multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary connections between chemistry, computer science, physics and biology. This meeting of scientists applying experimental and theoretical methods to study biological polymers encourages the exchange and discussion of results and ideas among participants with different backgrounds, thereby promoting interdisciplinary research activities.

We encourage early registration and submission of abstracts for the poster session. We plan to select posters for short presentations for most of the meeting sessions.

Abstract The first Heterocyclic compounds meeting was held in 1964, making it one of the longest running Gordon Research Conferences. This success and longevity is a reflection of the fundamental importance of the subject area. Heterocyclic chemistry is an underpinning science for a whole host of areas that are vital for mankind’s future.

These include new therapeutic agents, improved molecules to help sustain and enhance food production as well as dyes and electronic molecules that will play an important role in the conservation of energy as well as the next generation of consumer electronics. The meeting will cover many of these areas with presentations from internationally recognized scientists from both industry and academia . Lectures will describe new ways of synthesizing complex new molecules, new mechanistic insights and the issues with the translation of existing and new methodology into industrial settings.

Poster Sessions: There will be two poster sessions at the meeting. Poster presenters will be given preference for acceptance into the meeting. From the poster abstracts received by 1st June 2012, up to four posters will be chosen to be given as "Short Talks" at the meeting. Those interested in showing a poster should submit their abstracts to the Conference Chair.

 Dates 06 Aug 2012 → 10 Aug 2012
[ID=463039] Go to top of page
 LocationProvidence, RI, United States
Abstract Many important advances in material and biomedical science will come from controlling the chemical properties and nanoscale morphology of polymer mixtures. Predicting the longtime continuum-level properties of such complex systems poses a canonical computational challenge due to the disparate length and time scales separating the molecular description from the macroscopic behavior, particularly the evolution of morphology. This workshop focuses on four overlapping approaches to bridging this gap: Accelerated Molecular Methods, Coarse-Graining of Molecular Dynamics, Computational Approaches to Self-Consistent Mean Field, and Coupled Molecular and Continuum-Variational models. The goal is to spur the development of hybrid computational methods with the capacity to identify and characterize the rare events and the driving forces which steer the systems towards equilibrium, and connect the burgeoning growth in parallel-computation techniques for particle-based systems with recently developed classes of continuum models.
