 LocationMaastricht, Netherlands
 Organizer Technologisch Institute, Antwerp, Belgium
Abstract Sustainability, human health and quality of life have been selected by the ISCRE 22 Organizing Committee as key symposium themes because these topics will continue to determine the scientific, industrial and political agenda for many decades to come.

Energy, raw materials and feedstock resources will become increasingly scarce in the next decades while the demand is increasing tremendously in many world regions. Novel technologies and processes are needed for example for the efficient production of chemicals from biomass feedstocks and for the use of renewable and clean energy sources for electricity production and transportation. The growth and aging of the world population requires new and innovative health systems, such as in the field of controlled drug release, development of smart medical devices, and application of smart diagnostics and analytics. The quality of life is largely dependent on the air and water quality, the degree of emission reduction, development of new personal care and food products, and not to forget on improving process and product safety.

We hope that these three symposium sub-themes will motivate and inspire you to submit exciting and challenging abstracts that may cover many different aspects of these themes. For further guidance, we have collected a number of topics under four different levels, - ranging from fundamental principles to commercial applications -, that might serve as examples of possible contributions.

9.HAKONE XIII — The 13th International Symposium on High Pressure Low Temperature Plasma Chemistry
 Dates 09 Sep 2012 → 14 Sep 2012
[ID=444656] Go to top of page
 LocationKazimierz Dolny, Poland
Abstract Hakone is a bi-annual symposium, which gathers scientists and engineers working on chemical, physical and technological issues in low temperature discharge plasmas operating at atmospheric pressure. The objective is to exchange ideas on fundamental aspects of these plasmas and to discuss current developments on their applications in various areas, like gas, water and soil treatment, generation of radiation, surface processing, biomedicine and environment. Hakone provides a forum for sharing knowledge, experience and creative ideas in a friendly atmosphere.
Topics plasma, modelling, diagnostics, molecular synthesis and decomposition, high pressure discharges, surface processing, biomedical applications, depollution, environmental applications

10.EFC Workshop: Beyond Single Oxidants
 Dates 19 Sep 2012 → 21 Sep 2012
[ID=463586] Go to top of page
 LocationFrankfurt am Main, Germany
Abstract Single oxidant situations are not often present in high temperature industrial environments. Rather, mixtures of oxygen with other species are encountered which make the high temperature corrosion situation more complex than simply the formation of a homogeneous oxide scale on the material surface. Examples of such environments include various combustion atmospheres, e.g. oxy fuel combustion, the combustion of biomass, industrial residues or domestic waste, as well as gasification environments with low oxygen partial pressures and high activities of e.g. carbon, sulphur and other constituents. Although significant efforts have been undertaken in recent years to throw further light on such complex conditions, there still exists a considerable ambiguity and lack of understanding concerning the different mechanisms and how their interactions with one another govern the long term effects on materials. The need for further exploration in this area and for predictable component operation in such environments has significantly risen in recent years, as the intention to more efficiently use available resources has instigated increased planning to use hitherto unexploited fuels and supplies in high temperature processes. The aim of the workshop, thus, is to review the current state of knowledge and understanding in this area of materials science and to identify the needs for future research. It will follow similar approaches of former workshops in this series of EFC events on high temperature corrosion. All those interested in attending and/or presenting at this workshop are cordially invited to do so.
