ID
782374
Dates
09 Oct 2016 - 13 Oct 2016
Location
GRAMADO, RIO GRANDE DO SUL, Brazil
Abstract
Our understanding of the origin of the Universe, of its evolution and the physical laws that govern its behavior, as well as on the different states of matter that make up its evolutionary stage, reached in recent years levels never before imagined. This is due mainly to the new and recent discoveries in astronomy and relativistic astrophysics as well as to experiments on particle and nuclear physics that made the traditional boundaries of knowledge on physics to be overcome. As a result we have presently a new understanding about the Universe in its two extreme domains, the very large and the very small: the recognition of the deep connections that exist between quarks and the cosmos. Based on the understanding of the intimate relationship between quarks and cosmos, the IWARA meetings is focused on topics that connect these two extreme physical domains.

Nuclear Photonics 2016
ID
836456
Dates
16 Oct 2016 - 21 Oct 2016
Location
Monterey, United States
Abstract
Meeting Purpose Nuclear Photonics, i.e. pursuit of photon-based nuclear or isotopic science and applications is a new field of study that is being enabled by the rapid emergence of ultra-bright, quasi-mono-energetic gamma-ray sources based on laser-Compton scattering and by the creation of relativistic electro-magnetic fields with ultrahigh intensity laser systems. The first international topical meeting on Nuclear Photonics aims to bring together in one venue experts in gamma-ray source and intense laser development and experts from a variety of disciplines for which these sources may enable new scientific, industrial and medical opportunities. Topics Fundamental nuclear science and spectroscopy, novel medical radiography and radiotherapy, industrial non-destructive material imaging and evaluation, nuclear materials management, nuclear materials transmutation, photo-production of rare isotopes, photon-enabled pulsed neutron generation and science, photon-enabled pulsed positron generation and science, etc. Sessions Covering all aspects of the enabling, mono-energetic gamma-ray technology are also planned and will include; development of compact accelerators, optimization of laser-Compton interactions, detector systems for bright gamma beams, gamma-ray monochromators, gamma-ray optics, next generation laser technology for gamma-beam systems, novel photoguns, etc. Special effort will be made to integrate applications and machine development sessions so that each may motivate the other with respect to the development of nuclear photonics as a new scientific discipline.

4th International Technical Meeting on Small Reactors
ID
816836
Dates
02 Nov 2016 - 04 Nov 2016
Location
Ottawa, Canada
Abstract
Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) and Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS) are hosting the 4th International Technical Meeting on Small Reactors.

Small nuclear reactors can play an important role in addressing the energy, health, safety, security and climate change goals of the world. While the water-cooled small modular reactor technology is developing rapidly, a number of non‑water‑cooled advanced small reactor technologies, such as the molten salt reactor, the liquid metal reactor and the high temperature gas reactor, are being developed. These small reactors have advanced passive safety features, are resistant to nuclear proliferation, have no greenhouse gas emissions and promoted as being economically competitive. They are suitable for niche and off-grid applications as well as connection to electric grids in slow-growing economies to increase capacity as needed.

Next-generation research reactors are considered for multiple purposes, such as radionuclide production, silicon doping, neutron activation, neutron radiography, materials research, fuel irradiation and generating data for reactor physics code validation activities.

This technical meeting will cover topics of interest to designers, operators, researchers and analysts involved in the design, development and deployment of small reactors for research and power generation purposes.
