4th ISIS inelastic neutron data analysis course

Abstract:
This will be a training course on how to get the most out of the Horace, SpinW and Euphonic software packages. Horace is a widely used suite of Matlab programs for the visualisation and analysis of large datasets from time-of-flight neutron inelastic scattering spectrometers. SpinW is a Matlab library that can plot and numerically simulate magnetic structures and excitations of a given spin Hamiltonian using classical Monte Carlo simulation and linear spin wave theory. Euphonic is a Python package to calculate phonon bandstructures and inelastic neutron scattering intensities from force constant matrices.

Abstract:
The ORNL Neutron Sciences Directorate is organizing a workshop, Neutrons in Structural Biology – Challenges & Opportunities, to be held June 10-12, 2024 at the Sheraton Pentagon City Hotel, Arlington, VA. The goal of the workshop is to garner support for the construction of the macromolecular neutron diffraction beamline EWALD at ORNL’s Second Target Station. EWALD will be capable of performing biological neutron crystallography on radically smaller crystals to help meet neutron beamtime demand for challenging biological systems.

John White Symposium — Symposium in honour of John White

Abstract:
Professor John White was a key figure in the international scientific community for more than five decades. Over the course of a long and distinguished career, through a combination of advances in experimentation and choice of paradigm examples, his work demonstrated how neutron scattering data could be analysed to provide precise details of molecular structure and dynamics for a wide variety of chemical systems. John sadly passed away in August 2023. To celebrate and commemorate his lasting contributions, a symposium is being organised in his honour. We welcome contributions from John’s colleagues, collaborators and enthusiasts in what will be a celebration of a life well lived.

The NEUWAVE workshops gather prominent researchers worldwide in the field of energy-resolved neutron imaging, a cutting-edge methodology leveraging the energy/wavelength dependency of neutron transmission for enhanced quantitativity. NEUWAVE strives to promote collaboration and advance energy-resolved neutron imaging by facilitating the exchange of information and experiences in an intimate workshop setting. Key topics of the NEUWAVE workshop encompass the current status of neutron imaging instruments, the evolution of imaging methods (such as Bragg-edge imaging, resonance absorption imaging, and imaging utilizing neutron interference effects or polarized neutrons), the advancement of detectors and instrumentation, and applications of energy-resolved techniques.

Interfaces play an important role in a variety of applications, both in soft matter, quantum materials as well as in the food industry and energy storage devices. In particular, functional interfaces are a cross-cutting area of research with neutrons and other scattering techniques in science and industry and they offer a unique opportunity to create a networking event with an interdisciplinary scientific program at the cutting edge of science and technology.
