1.Mats Gustafsson Memorial Symposium on High Resolution Imaging
 Dates 20 May 2012 → 23 May 2012
[ID=449058] Go to top of page
 LocationAshburn, United States
Abstract Mats G.L. Gustafsson became a group leader at Janelia Farm in 2008. In April 2011, he passed away after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Mats was a leader in the field of high resolution light microscopy and pioneered a set of super-resolution methods including structured illumination light microscopy (SIM) and I5M. These allow visualization of cellular components that typically go undetected by light microscopes. This meeting will honor the memory of Mats and his contribution to the field of bioimaging by bringing together people who have worked with him over the years, as well as others who develop and/or apply innovative optical imaging techniques. Through a series of talks, posters and group discussions, we will cover various methods, including SIM, STED, PALM, STORM, adaptive optics, multiplane imaging, and others.

2.Three Dimensional Electron Microscopy — From Molecules to Systems - Visualizing Biological Complexity
 Dates 27 May 2012 → 01 Jun 2012
[ID=454808] Go to top of page
 LocationLes Diablerets, Switzerland
 Organizer Gordon Research Conferences
Abstract The 2012 Gordon Research Conference on Three-Dimensional Electron Microscopy (3DEM) will present leading research in three-dimensional structure determination of biological entities. The meeting will highlight recent progress in the areas of single particle/multiparticle cryo-EM, electron tomography, and electron microscopy of ordered assemblies/2D electron crystallography. As seen by the rapid increase in the number of structures determined, 3DEM is a key method in structural biology and cell biology and is unique in allowing determination of structure and conformational dynamics of a wide variety of specimen ranging form macromolecules and macromolecular assemblies to viruses, organelles and whole cells in their native environment. A focus at the conference will be on technological advances in instrumentation, software development, data processing, and tools for interpretation and validation that lead to improvements in quality, resolution, and reliability of the EM maps. Ample time will be given to demonstrating how 3DEM studies provide structural framework for our understanding of biological processes.

The 2012 GRC conference on 3DEM will be held for the first time in Les Diablerets in the beautiful setting of the Swiss Alps. The Conference will bring together world-leading experts in the field, junior researchers and also representatives of industrial partners. Following the tradition of previous conferences the program will offer an attractive combination of lectures and poster sessions. There will be two sessions with poster presenters selected for short talks. The program will also provide excellent opportunity for discussions and informal gatherings. Due to limited attendance (~150 participants) early registration is encouraged.

3. The 17th Annual Live Cell Microscopy Course 2012
 Dates 09 Jun 2012 → 25 Jun 2012
[ID=468116] Go to top of page
 LocationVancouver Canada, Canada
Abstract The UBC 3D Live-cell Course is organized by Prof. James Pawley, (University of Wisconsin-Madison) in association with the Departments of Pharmacology and Physiology and the Brain Research Centre, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Applicants must complete a brief, on-line questionnaire to assess knowledge level, field of interest and proposed personal, live-cell, project. (But don't let the Personal Project aspect put you off: if you plan to use 3D microscopy on living cells, we can usually find a way to make it work. Many lab managers take the course. as do those looking for "extended, hands-on, demos" on the latest instruments.)

Enrollment will be limited to about 32 participants (exact number depends on number of 3D Systems available). Selection will be made on the basis of background and perceived need. Those without previous LM experience will be provided with access to basic texts to read before the course begins.

The Course itself is presented in three parts: 2D (the first 5 days), 3D (the next 5 days) and Summary (the last day and a half). The first two sections are separated by the Manufacturer's Reception and the last two, (almost) divided by the Beach Party. After a one day break, the Live-Cell Course is followed by a 3-day workshop on 3D Image Processing (3D IP), June 23-25.
