NORMVIII — Eighth International Symposium on Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material
ID
748223
Dates
18 Oct 2016 - 21 Oct 2016
Location
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Abstract
All minerals and raw materials contain radionuclides of natural origin. Usually, the levels of exposure to these radionuclides are not significantly greater than normal background levels. However in some industries (NORM industries), certain activities can give rise enhanced levels of radioactivity in their products, sub products, residues and wastes in such way that may need to be controlled by regulation. A list of industry sectors have been identified as the most likely to produce NORM: oil and gas production, the niobium and iron-niobium industry, manufacture of titanium dioxide pigments, the phosphate industry, the zircon and zirconia industry, and many other conventional mining and milling industries. The NORM occurrence is a challenge for the industries, which must comply with standards from nuclear industries in addition to the usual environmental and worker safety requirements. The NORMVIII symposium will address the radiation protection control of NORM, and will include the results of new research, explore practical case studies of industrial applications and waste disposal practices, evaluate the practical implication of international and national standards as well as identifying new societal needs and technical requirements for regulators and industry on NORM. Possible solutions for using, recycling and disposal of NORM residues will be another focus area, as well as the quality of NORM sampling and measurements. The event is an essential platform for NORM industries, academic and research institutions, and regulatory authorities to share experiences, review progress made, identify opportunities and provide an in-depth analysis of current challenges. The symposium offers a multitude of possibilities and opportunities for networking.
