 LocationVictoria, Canada
Abstract Magnetic North is an organization of magnetism researchers in Canada and their international collaborators. It is a forum for information exchange on individual and group research activities. Magnetic North also serves as the basis for the organization of regular magnetism sessions within the annual congress of the CAP as well as stand-alone Magnetic North workshops. There are a broad range of magnetic researchers in Canada, spanning various academic departments and government laboratories using a variety of experimental, theoretical and computational techniques. Research interests encompass geometrically constrained systems (thin films and wires), molecular magnets, dipolar systems, frustration, quantum effects, phase transitions, magneto-electric materials, etc. A goal of Magnetic North is to facilitate the exchange of ideas between researchers and to reveal overlapping interests that can foster useful collaborations, serving also to strengthen the magnetism research community in Canada as a whole.

6.Program — Novel Directions in Frustrated and Critical Magnetism
 Dates 14 Jul 2014 → 08 Aug 2014
[ID=600738] Go to top of page
 LocationNordita, Stockholm, Sweden
Organizer Nordita, Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics
Abstract In a frustrated system, competition between interactions hinders the tendency towards forming an ordered state, allowing for the emergence of new physical phenomena. This programme will bring together experts in the field of frustrated and critical magnetism as well as younger researchers, to discuss recent developments, explore connections between different areas of research, and generate new ideas.

Abstract The conference seeks to bring researchers from different subfields of superconductivity research together to share insights on the nature of unconventional electron pairing. Participants will work towards constructing a conceptual framework with which to understand the relationship between strong electron correlations, commensurate magnetism, concurrent ordered phases and unconventional superconductivity. The conference will address such challenges for a broad range of unconventional superconductors. While attention will be given to novel aspects of the recently discovered iron-based superconductors, discussion will also focus on the heavy fermion materials, organic charge-transfer salts, and copper oxides.
