1.Third European Workshop on Self Organized Nanomagnets 2012
 Dates 16 Apr 2012 → 20 Apr 2012
[ID=453802] Go to top of page
 LocationGuadarrama (Madrid), Spain
Abstract The purpose of the European Workshop "Self-Organized Nanomagnets 2012" is to bring together researchers from different fields having an interest on the preparation, characterization, and application of magnetic objects with sizes in the nanometer range, with an special emphasis on bottom-up fabrication methods, such as self-assembly and self-organization. The field of nanomagnetism has established itself during the last years as an ideal playground to study the influence of size, shape and dimensionality on collective electronic properties and interactions, spin dynamics, etc. The knowledge derived from these investigations should allow to design and fabricate materials with custom-chosen behavior for specific applications.
Topics Magnetism at the nanometer scale, nanoparticles, self-organization, array formation and addressing, applications of nanomagnets, fabrication and synthesis, magnetic characterization, nanomagnets in medicine

2.WE-Heraeus-Multiferroics — New Routes to Single-Phase Multiferroics (505. WE Heraeus Seminar)
 Dates 23 Apr 2012 → 25 Apr 2012
[ID=457719] Go to top of page
 LocationBad Honnef (near Bonn), Germany
Abstract Multiferroic materials challenge our fundamental understanding of magnetic and ferroelectric order. The related properties, including the magnetoelectric coupling, make them promising for future applications in information technology. A strong magnetoelectric coupling is incompatible with traditional mechanisms of ferroelectricity, and so far no multiferroic material fulfilling all technological requirements has been found. To overcome these difficulties, new routes need to be treaded in materials research. In consideration of this, active scientists in the field will be brought together in the 505th WE-Heraeus seminar, in order to discuss the search for new materials and mechanisms, and their better understanding. The latter requires the development of new experimental and theoretical methods, which will also be a subject of the seminar. Younger colleagues will profit particularly from the exchange with experienced researchers in the field.
Topics Multiferroics, magnetoelectric coupling, new materials, magnetic and crystal structures, dielectric properties, model hamiltonians, electromagnons, DFT, thin films

Previous JEMS conferences took place in Grenoble (2001), Dresden (2004), San Sebastian (2006), Dublin (2008) and Krakow (2010).

The Symposia will focus on a broad range of topics embracing applicative and fundamental aspects of magnetism, as well as novel magnetic materials. Presentations will consist of plenary, semi-plenary, and contributed talks, complemented by poster sessions. A number of invited speakers will give lectures on important recent advances in the field. The attendance of young students is welcome.

The meeting is organized jointly by the Physics Department of the University of Parma and by the IMEM-CNR Institute.
