abstract: This highly successful course, now in its 18th year, provides an insight into the principles which underlie this important topic. The course is run by the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering, a worldwide centre of excellence in the field. Tribology – the science and technology of friction, wear and lubrication – makes a vital contribution to almost every area of industrial activity and yet is often under-represented in the education of scientists and engineers.

The course consists of an intensive three-day programme delivered by leading experts. It offers an excellent opportunity to gain an overview of the field of tribology. Lectures, combined with informal discussion periods and a workshop session, will cover the key elements of the subject and will be complemented by case studies drawn from current industrial practice.

abstract: Fluctuation-induced and effective forces play an important role in controlling the structure, the dynamics, and the phase behavior of soft and condensed matter, ranging from colloidal suspensions to liquid crystals, complex fluids, and wetting films. These forces typically act at the sub-micrometer scale and arise from spatially confining various media in which there are pronounced quantum or thermal fluctuations. Recent theoretical and experimental investigations demonstrate that such forces can provide versatile tools for controlling and manipulating the behavior of systems at small scales. The workshop will promote an active and lively discussion of recent theoretical and experimental advances in understanding the various manifestations of effective and fluctuation-induced forces, with particular emphasis on unifying concepts and possible technological and interdisciplinary applications. Formulating perspectives for future developments will be strongly encouraged.

abstract: FANAS is a new series of conferences initiated as annual meetings of the ESF EUROCORES Programme FANAS (www.esf.org/fanas), but is open to all scientists working on related topics. The focus of the conference is on revealing the relationships between adhesion and friction at the nano- and micro-scales as well as on mechanisms of energy dissipation in tribological systems. It will seek to bridge the gap between the nano-, micro- and macro-scales in friction, lubrication and adhesion, and will elaborate on new approaches towards control and modification of frictional properties. Issues of nano-manipulation at interfaces, studies of biomimetic tribological systems and tribochemistry will also be addressed. Following the spirit of past meetings the conference will be organized as a single-session event including poster sessions and allowing for ample time for discussions.

abstract: The main goal of the workshop is the identification and documentation of new unifying principles describing the essential aspects of collective motion in living systems, being one of the most relevant and spectacular manifestations of collective behavior. Scientific activity in this direction has recently grown very quickly. We will consider systems ranging from cultures of migrating tissue cells to ant colonies and flocks of birds. It is the aim of this workshop to pave the ways to possible new topics related to collective motion.

abstract: SSC-18 is the latest meeting in the series on interdisciplinary surface science conferences covering all experimental and theoretical aspects of surfaces, interfaces and nanoscale physics and chemistry. The meeting will also include a full day dedicated to the contributions to this field made by Professor D.P. Woodruff FRS.

abstract: This conference will encompass a wide range of topics within this area ranging from different types of fluids, such as; wind, current, biofl uids and ocean waves to different types of structures; tall buildings, ocean structures, cables, towers, bridges, risers and others. New research for the advancement of interaction problems will be the main focus of the conference. Papers with new applications to real world problems will be particularly welcome. The basic mathematical formulations of fluid structure interaction and their numerical simulation will also be discussed, as well as their physical modelling. Papers are sought in areas such as advanced analytical techniques, computer and experimental modelling, new applications and verification of interaction.
