Zusammenfassung: The sixth in a successful series of conferences, the 2008 BSSM International Conference on Advances in Experimental Mechanics will offer industry and academia the opportunity to present current developments in experimental mechanics in the unique venue of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), south west of London. The conference programme will include a number of opportunities to tour the world-class facilities at NPL - a series of laboratory visits will be organised as part of the conference to showcase some of the leading edge work being carried out.

Zusammenfassung: This highly successful course, now in its 16th year, provides an insight into the principles which underlie this important topic. The course is run by the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering, a worldwide centre of excellence in the field. Tribology - the science and technology of friction, wear and lubrication - makes a vital contribution to almost every area of industrial activity and yet is often underrepresented in the education of scientists and engineers.

Zusammenfassung: TOP is an evolving, dynamic conference that embraces cutting edge research topics and emerging scientists. It was thought having as a primary objective the meeting of a number of scientists working within the area of timescales of polymers, conceived as the background driving force for the progress of knowledge in many field of Polymer Science. For this reason the TOP Conference had sessions on various topics including Viscoelasticity, Adhesion, Processing, Transport phenomena, Tissue Engineering, Fracture and Yielding, Sensors, Thin films, Cultural Heritage, Biopolymers, Durability of Polymers and Composites, Nano-Composites. In the last edition (held on June 2006) 150 delegates were registered at conference desk; the program consisted in a total of 70 oral presentations (including the plenary lecture and five invited lectures) plus 60 poster contributions. Such a good response together with the presence of many young scientists were taken as good arguments to consider the replica of the Conference.

Zusammenfassung: The Web Handling Applications Seminar is a professional development program of the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology. Participants will gain an understanding of the methods used in the running and handling of continuous strips of flexible material through process machines. Those who would benefit from participating include technical managers, engineers and technologists.

Zusammenfassung: Over the years during the 20th century every branch of Mathematics, Pure or Applied, has been enriched and developed through continuous efforts, cultivation and contribution by researchers in different fields like Social, Physical, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences. Analysis of scientific thoughts and problems of science and engineering have been made through the language of Mathematics and as a result Mathematics as a subject has got continuous and intensive development through the passage of time. The purpose of holding such conferences is to bring together, on a common platform, scientists, engineers and researchers along with other eminent academic personalities in selected pure and applied branches. They would get ample scope to make exchange of views, ideas and thoughts besides presentation of papers and development of Mathematics as results of intensive research in the area of the conference-themes.

Zusammenfassung: The objective of the conference is to review the state-of-the-art in the physics of wave-mud interaction and related fluid mud processes, with a goal to establish a new framework to investigate wave-mud interaction.

Zusammenfassung: This Conference aims at gathering a wide community involved in the fields of rheology for which de Gennes' contributions have been decisive. The Conference will be based on invited lectures by distinguished experts in different fields. The presentations will be distributed in thematic workshops in which all the participants will have the possibility to present a poster after a short plenary oral presentation (of about 5 min.). Zusammenfassung: Mechanical aspects of nano technology stretch from increased strength of construction materials over the controlled reduction of the shear resistance of tribological applications to the conditioning of surfaces in either adhesive or anti-adhesive way. Nano-effects can be induced by the introduction of nanoparticles into conventional materials such as metals or polymers. Here technological questions like particle dispersion or aggregation have to be answered. Additionally nano-effects are achievable by material conversion due to high stresses or thermal treatment.

The conference targets fundamental as well as technological issues of nano-effects with emphasis on mechanical properties.

Zusammenfassung: The aim of AERC 2009 is to contribute to the advancement of Rheology by bringing together interested researchers from Europe and the rest of the world, and bridging traditional themes with modern trends. Following the tradition of European Rheology meetings, AERC 2009 will be a 3-day conference split into symposia that reflect mainstream or emerging areas of Rheology.

Zusammenfassung: OPTI 2009 is the 11th International Conference in this successful series on Optimum Design in Engineering Structures and Materials. The objective of this meeting is to communicate recent developments in advanced types of structures, particularly those based in new concepts and new types of materials resulting in optimum solutions.

Zusammenfassung: Nowadays the importance of contact and surface problems in many technological fields is well understood. They are complex and inherently non-linear due to the moving boundary and the different properties of materials, particularly along the contact surfaces. Structural components fail by wear, corrosion, high cycle fatigue etc, that is to say they are affected and initiated by surface conditions. The use of surface treatments can reduce the cost of components and extend the life of the elements for surfaces undergoing contact, a problem that will be specifically addressed by the Conference.

Zusammenfassung: Powders & Grains is an international scientific conference held every 4 years that brings together engineers and physicists interested in the micro-mechanics of granular media. The conference is organized under the auspices of the Association pour I'Etude de la Micromecanique des Milieux Granulaires (AEMMG).

Zusammenfassung: Hydrodynamic stability is of fundamental importance in fluid dynamics and is a well-established subject of scientific investigation that continues to attract great interest of the fluid mechanics community. Hydrodynamic instabilities of prototypical character are, for example, the Rayleigh-Bénard, the Taylor-Couette, the Bénard-Marangoni, the Rayleigh-Taylor, and the Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. A fundamental understanding of various patterns of bifurcations such as identifying the most dominant mechanisms responsible for the instability threshold is also required if one is to design reliable and efficient industrial processes and applications, such as melting, mixing, crystal growth, coating, welding, flow re-attachment over wings, and others.

The symposium is aimed at bringing together scholars with mutual interest in computational, experimental, and theoretical methods for the analysis of bifurcation and instability phenomena in fluid dynamics.

The purpose of the meeting is to present and discuss original research, research-expository and survey studies with emphasis on unsolved problems, open questions, and benchmark problems in the theoretical, computational, and experimental aspects of stability and bifurcation theory related to fluid dynamics phenomena. The goal is to exchange experiences and to stimulate further interaction leading to establishing new or to intensify existing international scientific cooperation in the field.

Zusammenfassung: The objective of the triennial international DYMAT conferences is to create a forum where people involved in the scientific research or the industrial applications related to the dynamic behaviour of materials can meet and discuss results.

The dynamic behaviour of materials is relevant in a multitude of situations ranging from automobile crashes and terminal ballistics to space exploration.

Zusammenfassung: The Annual Meeting of The Society of Rheology is held in mid-October. The meetings ordinarily last three to four days and are open to both members and non-members.
