Zusammenfassung: The 9th European Conference on Applications of Polar Dielectrics (ECAPD) will be held in Roma, Italy, from tuesday August 26th to friday August 29th 2008. ECAPD is the principal european and international forum where the latest research and technological advances in the field of polar dielectric materials are being presented and discussed. The conference is the ninth in a series that started in Zürich (Switzerland) in 1988 and was followed by the editions in London (UK) in 1992, Bled (Slovenia) in 1996, Montreux (Switzerland) in 1998, Jurmala (Latvia) in 2000, Aveiro (Portugal) in 2002, Liberec (Czech Republic) in 2004, and Metz (France) in 2006. The objective of ECAPD’9 is to achieve international and interdisciplinary exchange of information and cooperation among researchers in academia, government laboratories, and industries, and to stimulate growth in the field of polar dielectric materials and applications.

Zusammenfassung: The Congress is organized by the Virtual Institute for Artificial Electromagnetic Materials and Metamaterials - METAMORPHOSE VI AISBL and encompasses a Conference and European Doctoral School. The conference aims to address a wide area of research related to metamaterials, artificial electromagnetic materials and surfaces in the microwave and optical ranges, encompassing general theory, design, applications, fabrication and measurements.

Zusammenfassung: Microwave Photonics (MWP) is a cross-disciplinary field governing the study of interactions between optical signals and high-frequency electrical signals with increasing innovative applications and commercial importance in both photonics and microwave areas. This is the first jointly held conference incorporating both the IEEE International Microwave Photonics conference and the Asia-Pacific Microwave Photonics conference. This jointly-held conference provides an important platform for the worldwide dissemination and exploration of new advancements in the microwave photonics fields.

Zusammenfassung: The potential of microwave technology, which exploits the differing thermal dielectric properties of minerals to enhance grain boundary fracture, has been understood for more than 20 years, but has not been considered commercially viable until recently because of the large amount of energy required. However recent developments, such as pulsed microwave technology may overcome this. As microwave technology is aimed at improving mineral liberation, its major use will probably be in comminution, and will bring real advantages to the processing of ores, such as diamonds, where the valuable mineral needs to be recovered intact.
