Zusammenfassung: The 2008 Molecular and Ionic Clusters Gordon Research Conference will be one of the most exciting and important cluster science meetings of the year. The conference will be held at the Centre Paul Langevin in Aussois, in the French Alps, from September 7-12, 2008. This site is spectacular, with excellent opportunities for hiking and other outdoors activities.

The conference will cover the spectroscopy, dynamics, and reactivity of a wide range of cluster types and sizes, including helium nanodroplets, metal clusters, ionic clusters, hydrogen-bonded networks, and clusters involving biological molecules. Special sessions on cold-molecule collisions and aerosols are also planned. Both experimental and theoretical aspects of cluster science will be well-represented at the conference.

We expect to bring together an outstanding group of scientists at the forefront of cluster research. We are particularly keen to increase participation from post-docs and graduate students

15. Sep 2008 → 17. Sep 2008; Philipps University Marburg, Deutschland
Veranstalter: Wilhelm und Else Heraeus Stiftung

Zusammenfassung: In this conference the role of inorganic colloidal nanoparticles in the life sciences will be discussed. Chemists, physicists, and engineers can synthesis particles with high precision and tailored properties, but they are often not aware of the precise nature of biological problems. On the other hand, biologically motivated scientists are bound to solve their problems with commercially available particles, which still fall behind to the state-of-the-art particles available in modern materials research concerning their homogeneity and defined properties. For this reason the conference attempts to cover the whole interdisciplinary range starting from the chemical synthesis of functional colloidal nanoparticles, the characterization of their physical properties, the design of appropriate interfaces to biology, until their use as in vitro sensors and in vivo labels in life sciences, and diagnostics in medicine.

20.zum Seitenanfang gehen[ID=135675]Quantum and Kinetic Transport: Analysis, Computations, and New Applications
09. Mär 2009 → 12. Jun 2009; UCLA, Los Angeles, Vereinigte Staaten

Zusammenfassung: We are at the dawn of the nanotechnology era, where scientific and technological advancements in many fields strongly demand the investigation of problems involving small or multiple scales. In such problems, the hydrodynamic theory is often invalid, and one has to apply the more fundamental laws of physics, such as kinetic theory (Boltzmann equation), molecular dynamics (Newton’s second law or the Liouville equation), or even quantum mechanics (Schrodinger equation). This requires the development of new mathematical and computational methods for physical laws at these scales, or a mixture of them, which is facilitated by the improvements of modern computers. Mathematical understanding of the scaling limit from one scale to another plays an important role, and interweaves with the development of new multiscale computational methods. This program will focus on the mathematical analysis, computational challenges and new applications of quantum and kinetic transport theory. It will invite both senior leading figures and young researchers in these directions. Besides applied mathematicians, special attention will be paid to invite researchers in other fields in science and engineering, representing academic, national lab and industrial research.

Zusammenfassung: The nanorevolution is just around the corner. Research and discovery in nanoscience are exploding and numerous key enabling technologies will soon lead to far-reaching changes in our lives. In fact, nanotech is already weaving yesterday's dreams into today’s reality with great advances in fields as diverse as telecommunications, computing, medicine, energy, and textiles. We need to understand the transformations that nanotech will bring about, the science behind it, and how we can seize its benefits and limit its risks. This conference series brings together renowned scientists, engineers and industry leaders to engage in a multidisciplinary dialogue about nanoscience.

08. Jul 2009 → 11. Jul 2009; Weihai, China, Vereinigte Staaten

Zusammenfassung: Smart materials can be defined as materials that sense and react to environmental conditions or stimuli (e.g. mechanical, chemical, electrical, or magnetic signals). In the last decade, a wide range of novel smart materials have been produced for aerospace, transportation, telecommunications, and domestic applications. Furthermore there is increased activity in integrating smart materials with nanotechnology to develop novel materials for the applications in biomaterials, sensors, actuators, and textiles. Nanotechnology would permit control of matter at the level of atoms and molecules which would form the building blocks of smart materials.Smart materials are thus evolving from traditional fiber reinforced composite through functionally graded materials to the current nanotechnologically grown materials. These materials will thus have the capability of closely mimicking (biomimetics) nature enabling structures to act like human skin, or a leaf's chlorophyll. The field of Smart M
