1.go to top of page[ID=64785]Molecular Dynamics for Non-Adiabatic Processes
21 Jul 2008 → 22 Jul 2008; London, United Kingdom

abstract: Nanoscale phenomena, spanning multiple disciplines, share a unifying core problem: excitations away from equilibrium that evolve through non-adiabatic processes. Numerous techniques for modelling these have been designed and are undergoing rapid further development, usually within individual disciplines. This meeting will survey the spectrum of molecular dynamics based methods in order to highlight their strengths and weaknesses and to establish fundamental connections between them.

2.go to top of page[ID=119972]Optical Properties of Coupled Semiconductor and Metallic Nanoparticles
21 Jul 2008 → 25 Jul 2008; Dresden, Germany

abstract: The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers studying optical properties of nanostructures such as self-assembled quantum dots and colloidal nanoparticles. The workshop will cover both semiconductor and metal material systems. The focus will be on various optical phenomena in quantum dots, nanocrystals, and hybrid semiconductor/metal nanosystems. Special emphasis will be given to applications of coupled quantum systems in quantum optics, quantum information sciences, and nanotechnology. The frame of the workshop is planned to be small (around 70 participants) to provide a productive scientific environment for interesting discussions and exchange of ideas. We expect five exciting days of lectures given by highly recognized speakers from the field of quantum information with quantum dots, fundamentals and applications of colloidal nanocrystal molecules and super-crystals, spin effects in coupled dots, plasmon-exciton interactions, and theoretical models of electrons, excitons and plasmons in quantum dots. The organizers reserve a few open slots for a `Late News Session' that will include invited talks on new, cutting-edge developments in the field of optics of nanostructures. We encourage young researchers to apply for participation. The MPI has certain funds available for support of living and travel expenses of young researchers.

15.go to top of page[ID=160862]Colloidal Nanoparticles - From Synthesis to Biological Applications
15 Sep 2008 → 17 Sep 2008; Philipps University Marburg, Germany
organizer: Wilhelm und Else Heraeus Stiftung

abstract: In this conference the role of inorganic colloidal nanoparticles in the life sciences will be discussed. Chemists, physicists, and engineers can synthesis particles with high precision and tailored properties, but they are often not aware of the precise nature of biological problems. On the other hand, biologically motivated scientists are bound to solve their problems with commercially available particles, which still fall behind to the state-of-the-art particles available in modern materials research concerning their homogeneity and defined properties. For this reason the conference attempts to cover the whole interdisciplinary range starting from the chemical synthesis of functional colloidal nanoparticles, the characterization of their physical properties, the design of appropriate interfaces to biology, until their use as in vitro sensors and in vivo labels in life sciences, and diagnostics in medicine.

23.go to top of page[ID=135719]Quantum and Kinetic Transport: Analysis, Computations, and New Applications
09 Mar 2009 → 12 Jun 2009; UCLA, Los Angeles, United States

abstract: We are at the dawn of the nanotechnology era, where scientific and technological advancements in many fields strongly demand the investigation of problems involving small or multiple scales. In such problems, the hydrodynamic theory is often invalid, and one has to apply the more fundamental laws of physics, such as kinetic theory (Boltzmann equation), molecular dynamics (Newton’s second law or the Liouville equation), or even quantum mechanics (Schrodinger equation). This requires the development of new mathematical and computational methods for physical laws at these scales, or a mixture of them, which is facilitated by the improvements of modern computers. Mathematical understanding of the scaling limit from one scale to another plays an important role, and interweaves with the development of new multiscale computational methods. This program will focus on the mathematical analysis, computational challenges and new applications of quantum and kinetic transport theory. It will invite both senior leading figures and young researchers in these directions. Besides applied mathematicians, special attention will be paid to invite researchers in other fields in science and engineering, representing academic, national lab and industrial research.

24.go to top of page[ID=180403]2nd International Conference on Smart Materials and Nanotechnology in Engineering
08 Jul 2009 → 11 Jul 2009; Weihai, China, United States

abstract: Smart materials can be defined as materials that sense and react to environmental conditions or stimuli (e.g. mechanical, chemical, electrical, or magnetic signals). In the last decade, a wide range of novel smart materials have been produced for aerospace, transportation, telecommunications, and domestic applications. Furthermore there is increased activity in integrating smart materials with nanotechnology to develop novel materials for the applications in biomaterials, sensors, actuators, and textiles. Nanotechnology would permit control of matter at the level of atoms and molecules which would form the building blocks of smart materials.Smart materials are thus evolving from traditional fiber reinforced composite through functionally graded materials to the current nanotechnologically grown materials. These materials will thus have the capability of closely mimicking (biomimetics) nature enabling structures to act like human skin, or a leaf's chlorophyll. The field of Smart M
