| 2.MULTISCALE_C12 — Modeling Soft Matter: Linking Multiple Length and Time Scales | | Termin | 04. Jun 2012 → 08. Jun 2012 | [ID=420441] | | Ort | Santa Barbara, Vereinigte Staaten | | Zusammenfassung | Soft condensed matter systems, whether of biogenic or synthetic origin, often have hierarchical structure over a wide range of length scales, from atomic to molecular to mesoscopic to macroscopic. Capturing the influence of physical processes at all of these scales in a unified model poses a major theoretical challenge, particularly given that characteristic times grow with length scale. There has been great interest and activity in the development of multiscale methods to address this challenge. These methods attempt to bridge scales by coupling descriptions with different spatial and temporal resolution. In many cases, the physical descriptions must also vary with scale, ranging from quantum mechanical treatment of electrons or protons at atomic scales, to motion of discrete atoms, molecules or groups of molecules at intermediate scales, to mesoscopic or continuum treatments at larger scales. Development of multiscale methods has in general proceeded rather independently in the physics, chemistry, and applied mathematics communities. Approaches have varied from ad hoc fitting procedures designed to make contact with specific experimental systems to studies of simple low-dimensional models or models with few degrees of freedom that are amenable to analytic analysis. This research program will bring together researchers from a wide range of backgrounds for an extended period of communication and collaboration on the theoretical foundations of multiscale methods, to rigorously refine how they are used, and to broaden their applicability. The ultimate goal is to work towards a framework for multiscale modeling that is on the same firm footing as renormalization group methods or the approaches of computational statistical mechanics. | | Themen | Physics, Soft Matter, Condensed Matter, Multiscale Modeling | | Webseite | http://www.kitp.ucsb.edu/activities/dbdetails?acro=multiscale-c12 | | Verwandte Fachgebiete | Festkörperphysik |
| 3.Tribology — Paths of Dissipation | | Termin | 08. Jul 2012 → 13. Jul 2012 | [ID=455353] | | Ort | Waterville, ME, Vereinigte Staaten | | Veranstalter | Gordon Research Conferences | | Zusammenfassung | The GRC series on Tribology started already in 1960 under the title "Petroleum: Friction, Lubrication and Wear" chaired by William A. Horne and Cheves Walling and has run every two years since then. Even though the first conferences had a strong focus on lubrication, materials aspects were included from the beginning as well. Since those days all aspects of tribology have emerged from and into many different scientific disciplines because of the interdisciplinary nature of this area. Phenomena are analyzed over several orders of magnitude from atomic interactions to entire machines as well as from non-contact situations to extreme pressures and temperatures. During the 1980s computer simulations began to support experimentalists by revealing dynamic effects in contacts. They allowed for a first glimpse on the different paths of dissipation of energy induced by tribological loading, which could not be analyzed in-situ. Today simulations have become an indispensable tool to better understand the nature of tribological contacts at all scales. In addition they revealed that the dissipation mechanisms differ distinctly among the orders of magnitude. This results in a still existing gap between simulations and experiments as well as between atomistic perspectives and applied tribology. Thus the 2012 Gordon Research Conference on Tribology - following the tradition of the series - provides state-of-the-art presentations of leading scientists in physics, chemistry, materials, and engineering sciences, which will result in lively and stimulating discussions about the coincidences and discrepancies found between experiments and simulations and across the different orders of magnitude in time and length. The extraordinary character of this conference allows for a continuous exchange of knowledge and theories between established representatives from science and industry as well as students who just became involved. | | Webseite | http://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?year=2012&program=tribology | | | | | 4.GRCGCFF12 — Gordon Research Conference on Granular and Granular-Fluid Flow | | Termin | 22.
