[ID=420452] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtSanta Barbara, Vereinigte Staaten
 Zusammenfassung Soft condensed matter systems, whether of biogenic or synthetic origin, often have hierarchical structure over a wide range of length scales, from atomic to molecular to mesoscopic to macroscopic. Capturing the influence of physical processes at all of these scales in a unified model poses a major theoretical challenge, particularly given that characteristic times grow with length scale. There has been great interest and activity in the development of multiscale methods to address this challenge. These methods attempt to bridge scales by coupling descriptions with different spatial and temporal resolution. In many cases, the physical descriptions must also vary with scale, ranging from quantum mechanical treatment of electrons or protons at atomic scales, to motion of discrete atoms, molecules or groups of molecules at intermediate scales, to mesoscopic or continuum treatments at larger scales.

Development of multiscale methods has in general proceeded rather independently in the physics, chemistry, and applied mathematics communities. Approaches have varied from ad hoc fitting procedures designed to make contact with specific experimental systems to studies of simple low-dimensional models or models with few degrees of freedom that are amenable to analytic analysis. This research program will bring together researchers from a wide range of backgrounds for an extended period of communication and collaboration on the theoretical foundations of multiscale methods, to rigorously refine how they are used, and to broaden their applicability. The ultimate goal is to work towards a framework for multiscale modeling that is on the same firm footing as renormalization group methods or the approaches of computational statistical mechanics.

 Zusammenfassung Carbon materials play an extremely important role in our society. They not only constitute the largest supply of energy we use today (i.e., coal) but also are the bases of many important technologies ranging from pencils, adsorbents, and metal strengtheners, to batteries and many others. Recent studies on graphitic carbon, including fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, have further revealed novel optical and electrical properties, making it possible to use them for new applications in renewable energy as well as microelectronics. Moreover, there are many novel and exciting phenomena in these materials such as molecular magnetism, catalysis, many-body and relativistic quantum mechanics, etc.

Fundamental challenges associated with these materials have hindered our ability to understand and exploit them for various applications. These include precise structural control, characterization, and large-scale synthesis, which require the collective efforts of scientists in multiple disciplines to overcome. This conference will highlight the urgency for research on graphitic carbon materials and gather scientists in physics, chemistry, and engineering to tackle the challenges in this field. The conference will focus on scalable synthesis, characterization, novel physical and electronic properties, structure-properties relationship studies, and new applications of the carbon materials.

 Zusammenfassung The mechanical behavior of materials with small dimension(s) is of both fundamental scientific interest and technological relevance. The size effects and novel properties that arise from changes in deformation mechanism have important implications for modern technologies such as thin films for microelectronics and MEMS devices, thermal and tribological coatings, materials for energy production and advanced batteries, etc. The overarching goal of the 2012 Gordon Research Conference on "Thin Film and Small Scale Mechanical Behavior" is to discuss recent studies and future opportunities regarding elastic, plastic and time-dependent deformation, as well as degradation and failure mechanisms such as fatigue, fracture and wear. Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to: fundamental studies of physical mechanisms governing small-scale mechanical behavior; advances in test techniques for materials at small length scales, such as nanotribology and high-temperature nanoindentation; in-situ mechanical testing and characterization; nanomechanics of battery materials, such as swelling-induced phenomena and chemomechanical behavior; flexible electronics; mechanical properties of graphene and carbon-based materials; mechanical behavior of small-scale biological structures and biomimetic materials. Both experimental and computational work will be included in the oral and poster presentations at this Conference.

 Zusammenfassung The Gordon Research Conference on Electron Donor Acceptor Interactions (GRC - EDAI) is one of the premier international forums for the dissemination of cutting-edge research on experimental and theoretical studies of electron and energy transfer. For the past several decades, the GRC - EDAI has been witness to some of the most significant advances in the field ranging from fundamental studies on small molecules to applications in biology, materials, and energy science; enduring themes of this conference include photosynthesis (both natural and artificial), long-range electron transfer, as well as recent advances in molecular electronics, optical switches, and nanoscale materials in which energy and electron transfer processes comprise the conceptual underpinning for molecular and materials design. The diversity of the backgrounds of the conferees - representing all of the traditional sub-disciplines of chemistry as well as materials science, biochemistry, and physics - makes for a stimulating intellectual environment where science at the interface of these areas can be explored.

The upcoming incarnation of the GRC - EDAI will feature sessions on classic topics including proton-coupled electron transfer, dye-sensitized solar cells, and biological electron transfer, as well as emerging areas such as quantum coherence effects in donor-acceptor interactions, spintronics, and the application of donor-acceptor interactions in chemical synthesis. World leaders in all of these areas will be featured as speakers and discussion leaders, making the conference an excellent forum for scientists from different disciplines to meet and initiate new directions; for scientists from different countries to make contacts; and for young scientists to network and establish personal contacts with other members of this scientific community. A particular emphasis at this meeting will be sessions in which experimental and theoretical work are combined in order to illustrate and take advantage of the natural synergy that can exists between these traditionally disparate research efforts. The meeting also features an interactive atmosphere with lively poster sessions (several of which will be selected for oral presentations), as well as the inaugural Electron Donor Acceptor Interactions Gordon Research Seminar being held immediately prior to the main meeting.

 Zusammenfassung A plethora of new phenomena and new insights regarding room temperature and high temperature mechanical behavior of ceramics has surfaced in the last few years. This 2012 Gordon Research Conference on Solid State Studies in Ceramics: New Insights and New Paradigms for Fracture and Deformation will focus on exploring new theories and computational and experimental approaches that will push the boundaries of our understanding of the fundamental mechanical behavior of ceramic material systems, the future of hybrid and microstructural design, and the behavior of ceramics under unique or extreme environments.

The unique format of the Gordon Research Conference allows for the identification of emerging research areas and the presentation of work in progress that will not be quoted or cited (per GRC policy). Extensive discussion and poster sessions, as well as opportunities for informal gatherings in the afternoons and evenings, facilitate brainstorming and the development of new collaborations. This venue provides an excellent opportunity for junior scientists and graduate students to exchange ideas with leaders in the field.

All oral talks are invited but conference participants have the opportunity to present a poster on their own current research in progress on ceramics using experiments, computational approaches, theory and/or modeling.

 Zusammenfassung Material defects prsent a huge challenge for mathematical modeling and simulation, as anything that breaks up the regular, homogenous structure of a calculation requires special consideration. In recent years, there has been particular focus on the multiscale nature of materials research-how computational methods and mathematical models for describing materials vary from the atomistic to the continuum scale. This program aims to promote collaboration among scientists to assess the current status of defect modeling, promote the development of new computational techniques, and stimulate new applications. An application is available online. Encouraging the careers of women and minority mathematicians and scientists is an important component of IPAM's mission and we welcome their applications.
