5 Day Workshop at BIRS — Biological Active Porous Materials: Modeling, Simulation and Experimentation
04 Oct 2020 - 09 Oct 2020 • Banff, Alberta, Canada
Abstract:
One of the key technologies emerging in the 21st century is that of advanced materials, which offer the opportunity to change our lives in many ways, from improving energy efficiency through enabling new biomedical treatments and devices. In order to harness these materials, though, significant progress is needed in developing our understanding of how they work and interact, across scales ranging from those of atoms and molecules through the full size of devices constructed from them. Across the fields of experimentalists, materials scientists, and computational scientists focusing on active biological tissue, significant research is now underway in understanding the properties of both natural and engineered materials across these scales. This workshop brings together experts with distinct views on these materials and devices, aiming to seed the cross-disciplinary research needed to realize their potential to gain new knowledge on active biological materials and to best exploit it. We will bring together a diverse group of world-leading researchers focusing on discussions on the advances currently being made and the collaborations needed to fully unlock the transformative power of advanced materials by using biological active materials as role models.

Quantum Chaos and Holography
14 Feb 2021 - 19 Feb 2021 • Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada
Organizer:
Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)
Abstract:
This five-day workshop will facilitate an intensive exchange of ideas between string theorists, condensed matter physicists, atomic physicists and researchers with other areas of expertise actively working on theory and applications of quantum chaos. The main goals of the workshop is both to introduce researches from different communities to key models and results and to outline unresolved problems actively investigated by these different communities. Such a meeting should allow us to consolidate new ways of quantifying many-body quantum chaos and highlight their implications for important questions of different disciplines.

Novel Mathematical Methods in Material Science: Applications to Biomaterials
13 Jun 2021 - 18 Jun 2021 • Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada
Organizer:
Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)
Abstract:
We will aim to create new mathematical models of complex fluids that can bridge length and time scales, and study novel ways to model entanglement of polymers and filaments. We stress that the novelty of this workshop consists not only in bringing together an interdisciplinary array of scientists, but bridging the gap between what has been traditionally catalogued as pure and applied mathematics.

Locally Conformal Symplectic Manifolds: Interactions and Applications
07 Nov 2021 - 12 Nov 2021 • Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada
Organizer:
Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)
Abstract:
Our workshop aims at bringing together established and young mathematicians working in complex analytic, differential and symplectic geometry, as well as in geometric PDE's, in an attempt to produce a road-map for future research in the domain of LCS manifold. By focussing during a single week on the topological, differential geometric and complex analytic aspects of the theory of locally symplectic manifolds, we hope to provide the necessary synergy for a substantial future progress in the field. A problem session will be organized at the end of the workshop.
