1.zum Seitenanfang gehen[ID=191023]Applied large eddy simulation
27. Okt 2008 → 28. Okt 2008; London, Großbritannien

Zusammenfassung: Computational modelling of flows is vital for understanding & controlling processes relevant to aeronautical, environmental and numerous engineering problems. Most flows are turbulent, this dynamic complexity generally being treated using inexpensive deterministic mathematical models requiring calibration and validation against measurements. The increasing power of computers is allowing much less model dependent approaches. These will be explored in an application centred context between diverse fields.

4.zum Seitenanfang gehen[ID=201999]Dense Granular Flows
05. Jan 2009 → 09. Jan 2009; Cambridge, Großbritannien
Veranstalter: The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA)

Zusammenfassung: Flows involving solid particulates are ubiquitous in nature and industry alike. Such flows are found in pharmaceutical production, the chemical industry, the food and agricultural industries, energy production and the environment. Many unsolved problems remain, however. For example, the rejection rate by US pharmaceutical manufacturers is around 5% with the cost of losing a single batch of medication ranging from £50,000 to £500,000. In order to be able to solve such problems, granular flows need to be understood so that their behaviour can be controlled and predicted.

To date, we are able to describe rapid granular flows, where the particles are highly agitated and there has been some success describing static systems. The intermediate regime, where these two phases meet and coexist, is not as well understood and yet is the most commonly observed behaviour of granular flow. The objective of this meeting will be to interface the two ends of the particulate flow spectrum – those working to understand the fundamentals of granular flows and those attempting to control particulate flows in an industrial setting - to develop solutions to the complex problems presented by dense granular flows.

5.zum Seitenanfang gehen[ID=199168]Royal Society Discussion Meeting — Colloids, Grains and Dense Suspensions: under Flow and under Arrest
09. Mär 2009 → 10. Mär 2009; London, Großbritannien

Zusammenfassung: Colloidal suspensions undergo Brownian diffusion that arrests at high density, remobilizing under flow. Slowly sheared non-Brownian particles (dry or in suspension) likewise show chaotic trajectories, but of quite different origin. Both systems can jam spontaneously when too large a stress is applied.

This meeting will compare and contrast the flow, jamming and arrest of Brownian and non-Brownian materials.

6.zum Seitenanfang gehen[ID=158089]Multiphase Flow 2009 — Fifth International Conference on Computational and Experimental Methods in Multiphase and Complex Flow
15. Jun 2009 → 17. Jun 2009; New Forest, Großbritannien
Veranstalter: Wessex Institute of Technology

Zusammenfassung: Together with turbulence, multiphase flow remains one of the most challenging areas of computational mechanics and experimental methods and numerous problems remain unsolved to date. This conference aims to bring together modellers, computational scientists and experimentalists to share experiences, successes, new methodologies and in general to promote the advancement of this important area of fluid mechanics.

8.zum Seitenanfang gehen[ID=181265]BIFD-2009 — Third International Symposium on Instabilities and Bifurcations in Fluid Dynamics
10. Aug 2009 → 13. Aug 2009; Nottingham, Großbritannien

Zusammenfassung: Hydrodynamic stability is of fundamental importance in fluid dynamics and is a well-established subject of scientific investigation that continues to attract great interest of the fluid mechanics community. Hydrodynamic instabilities of prototypical character are, for example, the Rayleigh-Bénard, the Taylor-Couette, the Bénard-Marangoni, the Rayleigh-Taylor, and the Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. A fundamental understanding of various patterns of bifurcations such as identifying the most dominant mechanisms responsible for the instability threshold is also required if one is to design reliable and efficient industrial processes and applications, such as melting, mixing, crystal growth, coating, welding, flow re-attachment over wings, and others.

The symposium is aimed at bringing together scholars with mutual interest in computational, experimental, and theoretical methods for the analysis of bifurcation and instability phenomena in fluid dynamics.

The purpose of the meeting is to present and discuss original research, research-expository and survey studies with emphasis on unsolved problems, open questions, and benchmark problems in the theoretical, computational, and experimental aspects of stability and bifurcation theory related to fluid dynamics phenomena. The goal is to exchange experiences and to stimulate further interaction leading to establishing new or to intensify existing international scientific cooperation in the field.
