Résumé: International Conferences on Inorganic Membranes (ICIMs) are biennial international conferences devoted exclusively to the science and technology of inorganic membranes. ICIMs are the premier venue for reporting and discussing the latest developments in inorganic membrane research and development. The 10th conference, ICIM10, will continue this tradition with oral and poster presentations on the most recent advances in all aspects of inorganic membrane science and technology. Résumé: HWCVD-5 is a forum devoted to the advancement of HWCVD. The alternative names of catalytic CVD (Cat-CVD), initiated CVD (iCVD), and Hot Filament CVD (HFCVD) reflect the diversity of fields that have been impacted by this technology. The Cambridge/Boston area offers a multitude of activities to sample and enjoy and is a wonderful location to continue the spirit of international cooperation established at previous HWCVD conferences. The conference will provide numerous opportunities for networking among academic and industrial attendees.

Résumé: This Conference will be devoted to the rapidly progressing science and technology of graphene (atomically thin layer of graphite) and ultra-thin graphitic films. It will encompass investigations of electronic properties of graphene, modeling of its band structure and mechanical properties, growth methods, and preparation techniques of graphene-based field-effect transistors (GraFET’s).

Résumé: The 9th European Conference on Applications of Polar Dielectrics (ECAPD) will be held in Roma, Italy, from tuesday August 26th to friday August 29th 2008. ECAPD is the principal european and international forum where the latest research and technological advances in the field of polar dielectric materials are being presented and discussed. The conference is the ninth in a series that started in Zürich (Switzerland) in 1988 and was followed by the editions in London (UK) in 1992, Bled (Slovenia) in 1996, Montreux (Switzerland) in 1998, Jurmala (Latvia) in 2000, Aveiro (Portugal) in 2002, Liberec (Czech Republic) in 2004, and Metz (France) in 2006. The objective of ECAPD’9 is to achieve international and interdisciplinary exchange of information and cooperation among researchers in academia, government laboratories, and industries, and to stimulate growth in the field of polar dielectric materials and applications.

Résumé: Water is perhaps the most important chemical substance known. Without it, the very existence of life would be questionable. Yet its detailed structure and behaviour in the condensed phase and the interfaces between the condensed phase and its environment remain somewhat controversial:

Recent X-ray absorption studies on liquid water have been interpreted in terms of rings and chains of water molecules that other techniques, both theoretical and empirical, have failed to observe.

The structure of water layers at metal surfaces remains a topic of considerable debate since high quality quantum chemical calculations indicated a mixed water/hydroxyl layer could be used to interpret structural observations on ice layers on ruthenium while spectroscopic observations provided no evidence for such a mixed adlayer

While the gas phase water cluster community has provided detailed experimental and theoretical pictures of the behaviour of small water clusters, the problem remains that none of the existing interaction potentials for water can adequately describe its phase and interface behaviour fully.

Indeed as ever more sophisticated and novel experimental and theoretical tools are applied to the study of bulk liquid water and ice and its interfaces, it is becoming increasingly clear that this disparate information could heat the debate on the phase and interface behaviour of water rather than cool it!

Résumé: Transfer of Knowledge Workshop in Krakow, Poland, should help in fundamental understanding of the phenomena of spin momentum transfer effects. The latest investigations in the field of spin current induced magnetoeffects with emphasis on high frequency and ultrafast switching aspects should contrive to develop the novel model structures of technical devices for applications such as MRAMs, magnetic sensors, magnetic logic and other high frequency devices. Résumé: LEEM-PEEM is a biennial meeting reviewing the status of LEEM, PEEM, SPLEEM, XPEEM and related techniques. It aims at promoting and disseminating applications of cathode lens microscopy to a broad audience of interested scientists. Résumé: The 11th Asian Workshop on First-Principles Electronic Structure Calculations (ASIAN11) will be held at the National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung of Taiwan on Nov. 3~5, 2008 and will be preceded by two pre-workshop lectures on Quantum Monte Carlo given by professor Claudia Fillipi on the afternoon prior to the workshop.

This workshop is an annual series beginning in 1998 to provide a forum for discussing all important issues in physics, chemistry, biology and materials science using first-principles electronic structure calculations. The primary purpose of the workshop is to offer an opportunity for exchanging ideas and enjoying in-depth discussion on the methodology and its applications as well as promoting collaborations between participants. The majority of the participants are expected to come from Asia while scientists from other regions are also very welcome. Every time three to five leading scientists from outside of Asia are invited. Following the last Asian Workshop held in Hiroshima University, there will be a competition for the best posters.

Résumé: The last five years have seen significant progress in applying the methods of integrable systems to the cutting-edge problems of statistical physics. Remarkably, quite similar mathematical ideas have surfaced in different fields of theoretical physics such as the exact theory of nonlinear replica sigma models in the random-matrix-theory (RMT) limit, non-equilibrium dynamics of quantum systems, integrable theory of universal quantum transport in chaotic structures, various models of growth processes, and more.

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together active researchers from several field of mathematical and theoretical physics where the integrability constitutes either a central paradigm or an important calculational tool. Not less importantly, we also wish to encourage a dialogue between experienced practitioners of the theory of integrable hierarchies and the physicists of seemingly far-apart disciplines whose research may potentially benefit from the fruitful ideas of integrability.

The workshop topics include (but not restricted to) (i) Mathematical theory of integrability for physicists; (ii) Integrability of replica field theories in the RMT limit; (iii) Nonhermitean random matrices, growth processes, and integrable systems; (iv) Heuristic replica applications in RMT and beyond; (v) Novel field-theoretic approaches in RMT and mesoscopics.
