2.haut de la page[ID=254891]School — Model and Data Hierarchies for Simulating and Understanding Climate
08 Mar 2010 → 11 Jui 2010; Los Angeles, CA, États-Unis

Résumé: Simulation has greatly advanced climate science, but not sufficiently to the profit of theory and understanding. How can simulation better advance climate science and what mathematical issues does this raise? Our hypothesis is that the development of climate science (i.e., theory and understanding) will be best served by focusing computational and intellectual resources on model and data hierarchies. By bringing together physicists, mathematicians, statisticians, engineers and climate-scientists, and focusing on several themes that reach across scales and scientific methodologies, our program will provide a framework for advancing our use of hierarchical methods in our attempt to understand the climate system.

There will be an active program of research activities, seminars and workshops throughout the March 8 - June 11, 2010 period and core participants will be in residence at IPAM for fourteen weeks. The program will open with tutorials, and will be punctuated by four major workshops and a culminating workshop.

15.haut de la page[ID=324813]Exploring the Dawn of the Universe with Gamma-Ray Bursts
17 Mai 2010 → 22 Mai 2010; Cargèse, Corsica, France

Résumé: Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), the most powerful explosions since the formation of the Universe, are unique cosmic events. Lasting from a few milliseconds to several minutes, they shine hundreds of times brighter than a typical supernova, the ultimate end of a massive star, and about a million trillion times as bright as the Sun. There is roughly a GRB detection once a day from wholly random sky directions. It is now widely accepted that GRBs are produced when a massive star undergoes core collapse or when two compact objects merge (e.g. neutron star - neutron star, black hole - neutron star). Due to the extreme luminosity of the multi-wavelength emission, they are now considered as one of the best ways to probe the dawn of the Universe.

An international school aimed at improving our knowledge of the GRB phenomena will take place in Cargèse in May 2010. Other topics to be covered are the unveiling of the nature of the early Universe and the preparation of the next generation of dedicated instruments. The school will be open to the entire scientific community. The school will be based primarily on in-depth lectures, with the remaining time available for shorter contributions from participants.

41.haut de la page[ID=302253]Shell Effects in Finite Quantum Systems
25 Jul 2010 → 31 Jul 2010; Erice, Sicily, Italie

Résumé: The shell structure of atoms, underlying the periodic table, was explained with the advent of quantum physics. The study of nuclear stabilities led to the formulation of the nuclear shell model in 1949. And twenty-five years ago the electronic shell structure of metal nanoclusters was discovered. The aim of the School is to highlight the unity of physical principles that manifest themselves in systems as diverse as atoms, nuclei, clusters, confined quantum gases, nanostructures, quantum dots, nanowires. These areas are widely different in terms of energy scales and other physical characteristics, but their properties are strongly influenced by the quantization of motion of their constituent fermions. Furthermore, these quantum-scale phenomena have important practical implications. It is hoped that the diversity and the underlying universality of the physics presented at the School will make it rewardingly interdisciplinary and synergistic.

50.haut de la page[ID=332929]4th International Summer School: Physics of Functional Micro- and Nanostructures
13 Sep 2010 → 25 Sep 2010; Hambourg, Allemagne

Résumé: Functional micro- and nanostructures are essential to the development of novel and innovative technologies. The University of Hamburg is one of the leading international centers in micro- and nanostructure research. In several courses you will get a compact insight into the theoretical principles, experimental methods, simulation of real structures, and topical areas of micro- and nanostructure research. The lectures will be complemented by laboratory visits and computer exercises. Invited internationally recognized scientists will present their research and discuss current topics with you. You can present your own research results in a poster session and discuss them with Ph. D. students from the University of Hamburg. Two excursions to the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) and a company will complement the scientific program. This summer school particularly addresses advanced students with a Bachelor's degree, Vordiplom, or equivalent, Diplom candidates and Master's students.

The summer school will take place in the city center of Hamburg, Germany's second-largest city. The cultural program includes a sightseeing tour and a harbor tour as well as a day trip to the old Hanseatic city of Lüneburg.
