abstract: The aim of this year's School is to present a wide panorama of current research in Theoretical Physics: Quantum Fields and Strings, Gravitation, Biology and Supercomputing. World leading scientists in their respective domains will give an authoritative introduction to what are considered as the most promising ideas and research activities in various directions. This is meant to positively contribute to broaden our view of science in an era of super specialization. It is assumed that participants have already received a specific training in Quantum Field Theory and Theoretical Particle Physics. The School consists of academic lectures and discussion sessions. There will be plenty of time for other activities in the Campus of Parma University, sports, culture, sightseeing.

abstract: Hot and dense nuclear matter plays an important role in the quark-hadron transition shortly after the big bang, in the element production in stars and the interior of neutron stars. The properties of such matter under extreme conditions can be studied in heavy-ion collisions.

Several countries operate facilities or have plans to build new accelerator systems to investigate hot and dense nuclear matter in heavy-ion collisions. Such facilities are located in RIKEN near Tokyo, at GSI in Darmstadt, at GANIL in Caen and at MSU in East Lansing. For extremly relativistic energies, heavy-ion beams are available at 200 GeV per nucleon in the center of mass system at RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) in Brookhaven and even higher energies will be available at 14 TeV at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) in the ALICE experiment at CERN in Geneva. Erice 2008 "Heavy Ion Collisions from the Coulomb Barrier up to the Quark Gluon Plasma" will be devoted to the physics at these facilities and will explore future plans at the GSI Darmstadt (FAIR) and at the "Future Isotope Science Facility" at MSU in the States.

abstract: …the aim of the Association "School of Neutron Scattering Francesco Paolo Ricci" is to promote, support and encourage, on the national territory, initiatives in the field of Science, Technology and Culture. With this, it is intention of the association to keep alive the thought of Prof. Francesco Paolo Ricci and to carry on his work in favor of the neutron scattering community, especially concerning the training of young scientists. To achieve its aims, the Association will contribute to the education of students and young researchers and to the development of multidisciplinary projects involving neutron scattering techniques and its applications. The Association will moreover organize and promote schools, courses, seminars, conferences, workshops, symposia, meetings and every other cultural initiative in the field of neutron spectroscopy. The Association will support and popularize scientific information in its field of interest, through publications, books, monographs, videotapes and information systems. The Association will also organize meetings with private citizens and public or private operators about scientific and technological topics, in order to awaken them to the new requirements of advanced research…
